Hey there, Reader Let's hear it for the top 3...PositivityThe end of July is when teachers get inundated with Back to School advertisements and it is impossible to avoid the school supply aisles in the stores. If you have not already gone back to school, you know the first days are near. Spend these last hours, days, weeks by doing things that make you happy. This is also a great time to start new things and begin to make them habits. Maybe start a gratitude journal and begin noting all of the good things that happen in a day or during the week. “The Science of Gratitude” (2018) outlined the benefits of gratitude practice. They include; increased happiness and positive mood, less likely to experience burnout, better sleep, less fatigue, and more satisfaction with life. There are many other benefits but what teacher isn’t hoping for additional sleep and less fatigue. Sold! This habit will also benefit students. Have them keep notes of things they are thankful for. This practice does not need to be done daily but can be done once or twice a week. Tell students they can be thankful for big things or it can be minor things such as, "I am thankful they didn’t run out of chicken patties before my lunch period". Have students come up with three things each time you do this activity. A great time to have students do this would be during homeroom/advisory. While we believe in the positivity above, we also know not everyone in the building will be excited to start back. Polishing makes things bright and we challenge you do to the same with this section. Choose 3 (more more if you're feeling up to it) people you truly appreciate in your building and write a quick note of appreciation. It's the "I notice you and I appreciate you" card that you sometimes think in your mind, but don't always share like we should. Imagine the joy you could bring to someone on those first days back to school leaving a quick note telling them they are appreciated.
